Allegory of the Caves

Allegory of the Caves- an idea of Plato about a group of chained man living in a dark caves facing only the wall for the whole of the lives. However they could see shadows being casted on to the wall due to a light from the opening of the caves and such shadows are casted by events occurring outside the caves. Not known to them is that such shadows are induced by a ' truer' event outside the cave, rather than the shadows being true events. Would they began to perceive such shadows as the true world? Would they develop mindsets that the world is like that an try to suit themselves into such understanding of the environment? Would the one who can notice a pattern in the shadows be deemed as the smartest, yet still bound by the perception of the shadows being a true world. Or would the one who can freed himself from the chains, venture out to the outside world and see for himself what the true world is like can be deemed as having true wisdom. Plato believes that such a person like the freed prisoner would be known as a philosopher. His role in the society is to discover the true world, and guide the rest of the prisoners in identifying the real world.

I think this is rather impressive. I was watching the Matrix the past 2 weeks and did some reading on it after that, in fact the Matrix was actually built on the idea, Allegory of the Caves, whereby humans are all plugged into the Matrix making them believe that it's the real world they are living in. For eg. chained prisoners would be like normal humans who have long ago accepted the fact that we can't fly, however they don't even bother to really understand why we can't fly, they just feel that we move on with life. BUT people who began to really wonder why can't we fly? Are we bound by some laws that causes such effects? They began to seek the truth into knowing why and then slowly discover the world is just not as it seems. A set of physical laws causes such restrictions. They then think....how can we defy such laws? What are the other laws that causes restrictions. Through their research and efforts, they discover more things, invent things like aeroplanes, acquiring much more wisdom than the chained prisoners. And if you had notice, these people are actually the famous scientists who discover something new or the people who invented the aeroplanes and much more things.

Scientists and philosophers are in fact alike, just that they are going through different approaches to getting the same final answer of WHY ARE WE HERE IN THIS WORLD FOR? However i feel that scientists can get on research on their own, thinking and trying out methods and calculating equations and so on. While people believes that philosophers can too philosophize ideas on their own and come to new understanding, i beg to differ. I feel that like Socrates, the best way to philosophize is by conversing with others, through such conversations we can acquire insights and wisdoms, by learning how others feel we can actually understand and notice a difference in the way of thinking. IF you are still in that cave as a prisoner, how are you going to figure out you are in that cave by just thinking that you are in that cave, obviously you must have gained some insights through the interacting of others and began noticing a difference in ideologies, and ten ask yourself why causes such a difference and began to know that we are not bound by the way we think. Obviously some other factors are involved and what are such factors and how can we apply it to understand that we are actually in a cave unknowing to the world outside. Then you are a philosopher.

LOL! this is really interesting...it's okay that people don't understand, i was thinking about it when i was actually smoking in the toilet. Anyway my final question would be, Would you want to continue living in the cave bound by restrictions or would you rather be free and face the real world despite of how tough it might actually be?
